The Big Read: Southern New Hampshire Reads The Great Gatsby
![]()
The purpose of The Big Read, like the purpose of literature itself, is pleasure. Not necessarily an easy pleasure, but a deliciously rich and complex one. A great book combines enlightenment with enchantment. It awakens our imagination and enlarges our humanity. It can even offer harrowing insights that somehow console and comfort us.

The Great Gatsby
by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Communities in Southern New Hampshire will be reading the most popular classic in modern American fiction. In addition to book discussions, you'll have the opportunity to attend many exciting programs based on the 1920s theme.
Northeast Cultural Coop is partnering with Manchester City Library and libraries in Amherst, Auburn, Bedford, Candia, Deering, Fitzwilliam, Goffstown, Hampstead, Hollis, Manchester, Milford and New Boston to bring The Big Read to their communities.
We want YOU to be a part of The Big Read!
Go ahead and mark your calendar right now and save the date of March 20, 2009 and plan to attend our kick-off event at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester.
Also, do you have a book club? We'd love to have independent book clubs join the fun. Just let us know the date, the number of participants and a description of the participants--JOIN THE FUN! Send us an e-mail with the subject: BIG READ.
