Summer 2010
Dear Friends of NCC,
Northeast Cultural Coop is wrapping up its seventh year of offering programs on world cultures in New Hampshire and surrounding states. We invite you to help us launch or next year of programs by donating generously to our annual fund. We are in the final year of a matching grant from the Freeman Foundation and each dollar you give will be matched 1:1 by the Foundation to support our work to better understand the world through history, politics, and the arts. To fill you in on some of our programs from the past few years, here is a sampling:
- Two consecutive years as part of the National Endowment for the Arts “Big Read” featuring the novels “The Joy Luck Club” and “The Great Gatsby.”
- Teacher workshops on Japan taking teachers and others on an artistic trip to Heian Era Japan and the Imperial world described in The Tale of Genji, followed by a workshop in spring 2010 called “Shogun and Samurai,” introducing Japan’s Edo period and the exciting world of castles, warriors, tea-ceremonies, and printmaking.
- Storytelling with Japanese storyteller Motoko in partnership with The Healing Garden in Harvard, Mass. and with the New Boston Central School.
- Music through the national program “Meet the Composer” where NCC introduced participants to composer Shirish Korde in connection with the premiere of his chamber opera, Phoolan Devi: The Bandit Queen.
- Sitar and tabla concert in partnership with our friends at Moving Spirit in Merrimack, NH.
- Emily Dickinson tour with living history presenter Debra Conner to four libraries and one school to celebrate National Poetry Month.
- Taiko drumming performance by Elaine Fong, founder of Odaiko New England, as part of a special program called “Life is a Dance.”
We invite you to save the date of Tuesday, September 7 for an evening program with author and activist Loung Ung. Ms. Ung will present a talk called “First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers.” Ms. Ung is a national spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine Free World, a program of the Vietnam Veterals of America Foundation and the author of two memoirs: First They Killed My Father and Lucky Child. This talk will be held at Keene State College in partnership with the Women’s Studies Department.
Our work to bring cultural enrichment to people in our region of the country serves to create bridges between people of all ages and interests and we count on the generosity of people like you to help us continue this work. We value opportunities to collaborate with other organizations, schools and businesses to make the highest quality programs available to all. Please join us in setting out for another year of programs and workshops and help NCC thrive.
Best wishes for a restful summer,
